Parting Instructions :: Legacy

I was away from church this past weekend conducting an onsite visit at a church plant in Oklahoma.  From there I traveled to Marion, IN for a class at Wesley Seminary.  It’s Friday night and class is over.  I finally have a few minutes to sit down and do something other than school work.  Just got through listening to Sunday’s message.  Chris Taylor did a great job reminding us that…

Our LEGACY is determined by our RELATIONSHIPS.

You can listen to the message here.  Then spend a couple of minutes thinking about these three questions:

  1. Who has made the greatest impact in your life?
  2. Who are you investing in?
  3. What kind of legacy will you leave behind?

On Sunday we looked at another paragraph in Paul’s Parting Instructions to the Christ-followers in Colossae.  We focused on Colossians 4:2-6.  Our core truth was…

Christ-followers impact their relational networks for Christ.

You can listen to the message here and then use the following questions to help you reflect on your role in the mission of Christ.

1.  What comes to mind when you hear the word “mission”?

2.  What does it mean to be “on a mission”?

3.  Read Matthew 28:18-20.

4.  What is the mission of the church?

5.  According to these verses, how is the mission accomplished?

6.  What would change in your life if you lived every day with a mission consciousness?

7.  What is one thing you will do over the next 30 days to be more missional in your living?

Sunday’s message was a challenging one to hear and to preach.  It challenged us to live out our Christian faith in every relationship…from marriage to parenting to the workplace.  The passage for Sunday was Colossians 3:18-4:1 and the core truth was…

Christian faith must be lived out in every relationship.

Listen to the message here.  Then you can dig deeper by reflecting on the questions below.

1.  What makes demonstrating our Christian faith in our relationships so important?

2.  Read Ephesians 5:22-33.

3.  What is the foundation of all our relationships according to this passage?

4.  What does this passage say to wives?

5.  What does this passage say to husbands?

6.  What would it look like for you to live this teaching in your marriage?  What would need to change?

Two Questions for Thankful Living

Over the last few weeks, as I prepared for the talk I gave at church last Sunday on being thankful, I’ve been captivated by two questions I came across in F. F. Bruce’s commentary on Colossians.  The two questions were shared as it relates to learning, as Paul says in Colossians 3:17, that “whatever you do, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.”  Here are the two questions.  I hope they captivate you as well.

1.  Can I do this in the name of the Lord Jesus, whose reputation is at stake in the conduct of his known followers?

2.  Can I thank God the Father through him for the opportunity of doing this thing?

Parting Instructions :: And Be Thankful

Sunday we launched into the closing section of Colossians in a series we’re calling Parting Instructions.  This week’s message looked at Colossians 3:15-17 and was entitled And Be Thankful. The core truth for this week is…

Christians should be thankful people.

Listen to the message here.  Dig deeper by reflecting on the questions below.

1.  What one thing are you most thankful for right now?

2.  Read the first five verses of Psalm 103.

3.  What are some of the benefits from these verses that cause the writer of this Psalm to “praise” or thank the LORD?

4.  Skim the rest of the passage.  What other benefits do you see?

5.  Can these same blessings be experienced today?  If so, how?

6.  What other blessings/benefits for we receive from God that we should be thankful for?

7.  What are some ways we express our thanks to God?  Which one of these will you use today to “praise the LORD”?
